Managing pediatric Hashimoto’s disease with Ayurveda- A case-based exploration

Abstract
Background: Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis (HT) is a chronic autoimmune disease and a leading cause of hypothyroidism in children. Early diagnosis and effective management are therefore crucial as they can significantly impact their growth, development and overall health. Ayurveda offers a holistic approach to managing HT by addressing the root cause through balancing the Doshas (bodily humors), improving metabolism, and supporting immune health. Materials and Methods: A 12-year-old boy came to the outpatient department with complaints of fatigue, lethargy, weight gain, constipation, and poor academic performance in school. His laboratory values showed high TSH levels (>100 μIU/mL), low T3 and T4 levels, elevated anti-TPO antibodies, and ultrasound findings suggestive of HT. He was treated with Ayurveda medicines for 24 months in regular follow-up, along with dietary guidance to improve his metabolism and thyroid health. His progress was monitored regularly every 3-6 months through laboratory investigations and clinical evaluation. Results: Over time, the child showed steady improvement in fatigue, facial puffiness, and constipation, which reduced significantly by 3 months, and his school performance also improved compared to before by 1 year. TSH levels came down from the initial value to 9.36 μIU/mL by the end of two years, and his T3 and T4 levels gradually returned to normal. Conclusion: The present case highlights that the Ayurveda treatment, by correcting metabolism, supporting immunity, and balancing Dosha, can play a vital role in managing paediatric Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. Early recognition of symptoms, timely intervention, and regular follow-up are essential in this case with long-term therapy.
