Abstract
Background: Cancer has been placed under the category of lethal disease, that causes maximum number of deaths globally. When science advanced to chemo therapy and radiotherapy, the side effects or the adverse drug reaction to this were many. In Ayurveda the simple combination of Triphala along with honey is a drug established with its high antioxidant capabilities that is inferred to reduce the cell proliferation and ROS(Reactive oxygen species) Activities to the rich amount of poly chemicals present in the three myrobalans. Aim: The study was planned to evaluate the anti-carcinogenic potential of Triphala Samskarita Madhu (Honey processed with Triphala decoction) and Triphala Kashaya Mishrita Madhu (Honey mixed with Triphala decoction) on selected cancer cell lines. Materials and Methods: Cell lines of breast cancer and colon cancer selected were subjected for the tests respectively. Data was collected and co related for the percentage inhibition between all the 3 samples such as Tripahala Kashaya, Kashaya Mishrita Madhu and Kashaya Samskarita Madhu. Results: Triphala Kashaya Samskarita Madhu exhibited highest Anti-proliferation and Anti oxidant activity compared to rest of the samples. Though activity was concentration dependent in Tripahala Kashaya sample, activity declined in higher concentration of Samskarita Madhu sample. Conclusion: The study of these combination samples were found effective in-vitro in cancer cells that can be further taken to a clinical trial that may prove helpful for management of cancer as a palliative care. This also depicts some survival benefit and may not worsen the condition of the patient.
